My suggestion is a fantasy subcategory. Maybe under "Culture & Society"?

Here's a live test page that's pulling the current categories out of the database in two different formats, a tabled list and a drop down list. http://www.webringo.com/categories.php(This is just a dev/test page that we're using for some POC testing.)

It is wierd to have a fantasy category in "Culture & Society" section. Fantasy could mean those magical world with dragons and stuff. It would be better in some story books or something art section.

I agree... i would put it somewhere under entertainment, although it doesn't quite fit into 'books, television, movies'... unless you added other subcategories to "entertainment", like a 'alternative culture' subcategory. Likewise, where would "paranormal" go? I know a lot of directories put it under Religion & Beliefs, and they usually end up under "paganism" but that isn't exactly correct, either. Maybe that should be it's own sub-category, because it's not a subset of a religion, but it is a belief (i.e. ghosts, or aliens, maybe) Siobhan

Specifically, it's a ring about unicorns but since I'm a big fantasy fan, I may make some more rings in that sort of genre.

Got it, that makes sense now. Actually, would that fit into a "mythology and folklore" type category? or a subcategory within that? I mean, I personally have rings that would fit into a mythology/folkore category, so you wouldn't be the only one wanting that if it were applicable :)

Just my 2˘, but I think a "mythology and folklore" category or subcategory is a good one, and I'll try and figure out where add it. Maybe a top-level category? Or placed under "Culture & Society" or "Entertainment & Arts" perhaps?

I think "Mythology and folklore" should be a subcategory of "Culture & Society" because technically, myths and folklore are an intregral part of a culture.

I agree.
As for a general "fantasy" category... what would you think about a "genre" or "general" category under entertainment, and then subcategories such as "fantasy", "science fiction", etc. It's not perfect, but it's a tough subcategory to place!

Why don't you guys take a look at how Yahoo catagorise their listing and decide how you want from there?

According to the ring membership in the system, I don't see the need to expanding the ring catagory to many many sub category. It will create too many empty or just one ring within these sub-sub-category that it will be quite fustrating to see that with so many categories there is only one or no rings in it.

Killer wrote: Why don't you guys take a look at how Yahoo catagorise their listing and decide how you want from there? Well, I guess that's why we're discussing it over here and not in the official category suggestion thread :) On that note though -- I'm afraid that won't be of much help. There are far too many sub-categories on the Webring.com system to be useful here -- we wouldn't be able to fill them here for years. Just one level of sub-category is what we're trying to figure out now, but what we're trying to decide in this instance is which category the specific sub-category would go under. I've made my 'official' suggestions elsewhere, and those I do stand by as definately needing to be sub-categories.
