UPDATE: CODE CHECKER
« on: Oct 31 07 »

The new automated code checker is in place and working. (Well, as far as we know...   )

The checker runs once a week on Sunday and will send you a single email with the following information:

- a list of sites you own that didn't pass the code check.
- a list of rings you own with sites in them that didn't pass the code check.
- a list of what the error messages mean, with a short description.

You should only get one email. If you get more than one it means you have multiple accounts on WebRingo (multiple user logins). Multiple user accounts aren't needed on WebRingo, so if you'd like us to consolodate your accounts into a single, unified account, please let us know.

As always, suggestions are welcome.

Well.... Can't say its working for me.  Did it run on Nov 4 or has it yet to run on Nov 11?

I had run a manual check on 47 sites in my ring using the manual checker tool available to ring managers a couple of weeks ago and had previously found a few of my sites failing.  I contacted those sites to ask that they fix the problems.  I went in to recheck tonight (today?  It's closeto 3 AM my time) to see who I was going to drop for not fixing the problems.

One site had code that was displaying and working but when I ran the manual checker it was failing.  On checking the page source code I was not able to locate the nav bar code and it appears that it was running in a frame.  The manual checker was picking this problem up as bad.

Second site was running nav bar code HOWEVER it was showing as ring 469.  I'm Ring 393.  My manual checker was reporting this as bad.

Last one had no nav bar code at all, however it appears that this person has set up their own ring - can't say as I see code of any kind and the registered page redirects after about 5-10 seconds to another page.

So... I removed these 3 sites from my ring (393) so there is no evidence to review.  Sorry.  In my case I was dealing with sites that had bad nav bar code or no code at all and they had been asked to fix the problem a while back and did not respond.

So the manual checker seems to be picking these things up, but I didn't see anything from the auto checker, presuming it ran this past weekend.

It would be nice if the checker - at some point - simply reports X sites in Ring Y with Z sites failing and W sites passing and of course a list of sites that are failing.  At least we'd know the checker ran for those sites that are fortunate to have their sites up to date with nav bar code.

I still think (opinion only) that a global checker managers can run on demand is the way to go and only straining your system there with a checker every month or longer would be necessary.

Keep cool!

Sidebar....

I appreciate all the efforts here.

The big bad Larry that brought many of us here is still having issues and unhappy people.

I successfully and SLOWLY removed all my sites from them over close to a year so no red flags went up.

It didn't run the 4th, but it ran last night and will run every Sunday from now on. Sorry for the mixup.

Quick Update:

The codechecker has been reset so that it only runs once on the 15th of each month.

Been ages since we have heard anything here.

Any update on making the checker available to users?

Not the single-site checker - we have that - but a utility that allows us to run all sites in our ring(s) similar to the one you have running on the 15th.

For what that is worth however, I have had some sites failing that were never reported to me, or may have been caught up in a spam filter if any report was sent.  I did manage to get the individual sites corrected but it does somewhat point the finger at getting the global checker available to us so we can occasionally run a check of sites in a ring ourselves.

Finally, if a report is sent, what is the address it will come from so I can set a white list exemption for it.  I already get new site requests so that is not a problem but if the checker report has excessive punctuation, dates and times, and the like that can and will trigger some ISP filters per my owe personal experience.

Hope all is well there and regards to all.

I've ask the lead dev if he can make this happen.
